[NTLUG:Discuss] Sanity check on running a linux box as a router

I am thinking of just setting up a linux box as a router than get a
device from Netgear, Ascend, Cisco, etc.  What I need a sanity check on
is this:  If I do run a linux box as a router, don't I need two NICs -
one for incoming/outgoing traffic (WAN side) and then one for the routed
traffic (LAN side) of the box.
