You don't *really* have to assign two nics...but you would probably 
want to, if only to maintain a "clean" and "dirty" side-if you wanted 
to, you could assign a secondary ip to the same nic-one being the 
external-and one being the internal, which would be your gateway. 
You would definately have to compile ipchains and ipfwadm in your 
kernel..use the firewall howto located at the Linux Documentation 
Project for the fw rules...
