First, which cable provider, TCI, Charter?
I don't know about Charter but TCI will provide up to 3 IPs. The first is
included in the base cost, 2 and 3 are 4.95 each a month.
As far as setting up the networkyou can go basically a couple of different
ways.
1) Plug the cable modem directly into the hub and all PCs plugged into the
hub with proper TCP/IP configuration with IP issued from cable access
provider will be fully functioning host on the Internet. This is the
simplest configuration but not very secure.
2) One computer will need to have 2 NICs installed and working. One will
have the cable modem connected to it and it will be assigned the IP from the
cable access provider. The other NIC will connect to the HUB and will have
a non-routable IP assigned to it (i.e. 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, or
172.16.x.x). You can set this computer up as a firewall using ipchains and
ipfwadm. I don't know the particulars on how to do this, I have to learn
how also. You'll also need to setup IP Masquerading so that you only have
to pay for the first IP.
I have to learn method 2 fairly soon myself. As soon as I have my server
built, and my new house is completed.
I'll be glad to answer any questions I can about specifics on setting up the
TCP/IP, but I'm pretty much a novice when it comes to setting up the daemons
other the apache.
