This is way I went and am pretty happy.  The phone wire that runs from
room to room comes together in my [wiring] closet, which plugs into my
3Com OfficeConnect LAN Modem (yeh, it's really a dial on demand
router).  The outside line goes into it as well.  It has 2 POTS plugs. 
And I run all my network cables there to run into the modem/router as
well.  I don't use the computer from multiple rooms just yet, but I
suspect that won't be far off w/ school starting, and dad is planning an
"upgrade" so the kids will get the old computer. :-)  BTW, it gives me
NAT and DHCP.  Except that I just lost 1 LAN port on the back (there's
4), it's been a nice device.  Guess I need to get ahold of 3Com about
that...
