[NTLUG:Discuss] Tape Backup Question

I bought a Iomega Ditto Tape Drive from IMS (Michigan) for $5 from Yahoo
Auction last month.
So far, my biggest problem is that the QIC-3020 tape (Iomega 3.2 Gb)
MUST be factory-formatted. If for any reason the format loses its sync
bits, the tape is "el garbarge."
Out of some 20 backup efforts, I've lost 4 backup contents (and lots of
agony sessions). I've gone thru 3 tapes due to loss of format so far and
can no longer trust the tape/drive to retain its information. In fact,
I'm thinking of giving the tape drive away (more trouble than its worth).
Any taker?
