i got my sound card working properly now thanks to Mr. Baker's statement
above.  i had tried (not very hard) to pass a parameter to the kernel to
set the sound card type, but i didn't do it properly.  after Mr. Baker's
remark, i went and read (*gasp*) the kernel-parameters documentation and
solved the problem.  for those interested, i simpled added the following
to my lilo.conf: 

  append="sound="esstype=1788""

works great.  don't need to use modules anymore.  i never figured out how
to make my "sound" module autocleanable, so if anyone knows how exactly,
i'd still like to know.
