Unfortunately, this won't help the GIF problem.  If you compress GIF's
using a different algorithm, Netscape and IE won't be able to read them

so we might as well abandon GIF and go to PNG - which is undoubtedly a
superior format - and *somewhat* supported by more recent versions of
Netscape and IE.
