NIS would be my first suggestion on this. But it has limitations and
draw backs. Plus you would still need to do the patching individually to
each machine.

You could also do an rdist type deal but it does take some work to setup
the configuration of it.

NIS+ can be run on Linux but I don't think you can do any more than be a
client.

Best thing I could say would be to setup nfs mounting of /usr/local
/usr/bin ect. from one machine and then use rdist or NIS to do the
users.
