[NTLUG:Discuss] SCSI interfaces question

Ultra160/m is the latest SCSI protocol. It supports (surprise) 160 Mb/s bus
rate. I believe it does this by multiplexing channels. As always, it is
backwardly compatible and any 160/m harddrive will support other scsi's.
Adapters have just become available, but several hard drives have been
supporting it for a while. I have a Quantum Atlas IV U160/m which is an
incredibly fast 7200 RPM drive (faster than my 10K Cheetah!) running off an
Adaptec 2940UW.

Since hard drive data transfer speeds are no where near these bus bandwidths,
you do not have to worry about maxing out unless you have many harddrives
contending for bandwidth - 4 or more Quantum Atlas 10K drives for instance.

Subject: [NTLUG:Discuss] SCSI interfaces question

Greetings, all.

I'm looking for a new SCSI hard drive. Before I place an order, I've got a
question about the various SCSI interfaces. I have an Adaptec AHA2950U2W
controller, which supports 50-pin SCSI, 68-pin Ultra Wide, and 68-pin
Ultra2 Wide.

I'm seeing several drives which support Ultra160/m SCSI. What is this?
And, more to the point, can I use it? It looks like the '160/m' is a
transfer rate, but this isn't clear. If so, since my card doesn't directly
support this, can I hook it up to the slower bus and use it at half speed,
or will it simply not work?

Thanks,

Richard
