UDMA 66 uses a different kind of cable and apparently you can only do the
fallback thing by switching back to a traditional IDE cable. (At least
that's

I don't think that is true.  Although UDMA 66 uses a special cable with
twice as many connections, it really doesn't use the additional connections
for anything other than "boosting" the signal quality of the typical set of
IDE connections.  It should be able to work OK as a standard IDE interface,
although it might be even slower than one.
