I boot from the cdrom, choose INSTALL, CUSTOM, DISK DRUID (or FDISK, which gives
the same result), and get the error message:
"An error has occurred - no valid devices were found on which to create new
filesystems. Please check your hardware for the cause of this problem."

is trick linux into treating the hard drive as a UDMA 33 drive for the install,
and then patch the kernal to support UDMA 66. I haven't found anyone saying that
there's UDMA 66 support built into any of the current releases of the kernel,
though there may be.
My original question was whether there's a distribution available that has UDMA 66
support, and based on what I've read today, I'm inclined to think there isn't yet
one available. But I hope I'm wrong.
