[NTLUG:Discuss] Help on replacing My Wingate Server

Ray--

I'm not too sure what books you've been reading, but my Linux network
"bible" is the Linux Networking Guide (published by O'Reilly, previously by
SSC, also available freeon-line) by Olaf Kirsch (I believe that's the
correct spelling). It's fairly old, but much of the information is still
very relevant.

I use diald for automatic dialing. It has a nice GUI front-end that allows
you to monitor various daemon properties, run in manual mode, etc. It works
well with IP masquerading (I would assume it would work with ipchains also,
but that's a WAG on my part). It will work "right out of the box," or you
can tune it to the nth degree.

As for routing tables, I believe the Kirsch book covers this in some detail.

IP masquerading/ipchains takes care of IP address translation for you,
there's nothing really to do on your part. If you want to know exactly how
it's done, I guess you'll have to dig up a how-to, look at the source code,
or maybe someone here will explain it to you. I seem to recall a how-to
called NET3 that covered IP masquerading in some detail.

Hope this helps some. This sounds like a good topic to cover at one of the
NTLUG meetings...
