Have you checked that your box isn't overheating?  Two CPU's and
a lot of memory - all working hard...it could be chucking out a
fair amount of heat.

Also (as Alan suggested), I'd suspect SMP problems. Try running
with a single CPU and see if you can eliminate SMP as a cause.
