[NTLUG:Discuss] Hillcrest Needs

Now that we're in school and I've been able to do research, etc. I've discovered our greatest needs.  

Currently I teach programming and webmastering.  The computers in "my room" are 8 years old.  Even though they were upgraded a couple of years ago, I'm not really able to teach state of the art stuff.  They are also dropping like flies.  Needless to stay, that disappointing.

What I'd like to do, is to replace these workstations, and place these workstations around the school for other people to use them for Internet research, office applications, etc.  The district will still maintain them.

AND even if the district were to provide us with new machines in the near future, then the equipment with donated funds would be distributed around the building for other education uses.  

I don't expect any one individual or business to be able to provide the whole amount -- but I have done some pricing and have some ideas on what we would want.  First, if anyone in NTLUG has funds they would like to donate to this cause, it would be greatly appreciated.  Second, I know that most of us work in some technology related field -- and I would hope the various employers in the area would be willing to donate funds to this cause.

Approximately 50% of Hillcrest students are on free or reduced lunch.  Over the years, I've been able to teach my students enough to get good entry level technlogy type jobs.  One of my recent graduates is working for MCI translating documents for various technical departments into Spanish.  Let's face it, computer science is one of the very few things we teach at the high school level that leads to a good paying job!  I hate to be turning students away.
