I have one of these (I believe it's the same card...model #?)
and I had to:
1) get a dos program from SMC's site that turned off pnp
(the same program also lets you change the i/o address in
case you have a conflict--I did once and trying to load the 
driver gave me just about no explanation about what the problem
was.  cat /proc/ioports to check.)
2) use a program called scanport to locate the i/o address for the
card--the docs that come with scanport explain basically how to
use it
3) modprobe ne.o io=<the address I found it at>
