Kelly--

I use a packet sniffer called protolog which will monitor various ports
that you configure for icmp, tcp, and udp packets.  Everything gets
logged in a summary file (ASCII) and a binary file.  An interpreter can
be used to grep through the binary files if there's something of
interest in the summary files.  I'm sure there's other sniffers out
there, but this one was (1) up and running the first time I compiled it,
and (2) has a very readable output format for network dummies like me.
