I have an older Oldsmobile Cutlass (1988)-There is a way to read the ECM
codes without having to have any type of meter or expensive device. First
you need to get on the internet-or get you a Chiltons to find out the ECM
codes. One good place to start could be http://www.westecauto.com.
You need to enter your vehicle into DIAGNOSTIC MODE. To do this, turn your
engine off, find your diagnostic connector (the one the mechanic plugs
into the computer at the dealership), it's usually located under the
driver's side dash. Then, what you need to do is jump the 2 top right
"slots" on your connector, a paperclip work fine for this. Just bend it,
and "plug" it the ends in to the 2 top right "slots" on the diagnostic
connector. Then, just turn your ignition to the on position, don't start
your car. You will then see your CHECK ENGINE LIGHT start to flash, it
will flash once, pause then flash twice. This is a CODE 12, this code
means your DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM is working correctly. It will flash the CODE
12 3 times, then it will flash any other codes 3 times each. When all the
stored codes have been shown it will flash a CODE 12 again. To read the
codes, just counts the number of "blinks". ie: 3 blinks, pause 9 blinks,
is a code 39. I did this with my vehicle to find out that there was not
enough pressure in the air conditioning unit, it was running low...saved
me a quick $60.
