Thanks to all who responded.  I had recently disconnected this network
from
its internet modem connection.  However, I did not change the nameserver
entry
in /etc/resolv.conf to remove my ISP nameserver dotted quad. 
Apparently, the 
inability to contact the nameserver address caused the 5 minute delay
and startx
would freeze until the lookup timed out.

After removing the nameserver entry startx is performing normally again
