Did you read this in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound/README.OSS?
"Sound Galaxies
--------------

There are many different Sound Galaxy cards made by Aztech. The 8 bit
ones are fully SB or SB Pro compatible and there should be no problems
with them.

The older 16 bit cards (SG Pro16, SG NX Pro16, Nova and Lyra) have
an EEPROM chip for storing the configuration data. There is a microcontroller
which initializes the card to match the EEPROM settings when the machine
is powered on. These cards actually behave just like they have jumpers
for all of the settings. Configure driver for MSS, MPU, SB/SB Pro and OPL3
supports with these cards."

You don't mention anything about "MSS" support.
You might also trying booting into windows, then soft booting into linux to see
if the firmware works.

Subject:  [NTLUG:Discuss] Sound configuration problem

Hi all,

I was hoping that someone could point me in the right direction. In short,
I have my sound card working partially, and I would like to get it working
fully. I can get eight bit sound only, not 16 (which it should do), and I
can't get the mixer (again, which I think it should). Other details:

* I've made a thorough search using several linux related web-sites,
deja.com, northernlight.com, and (on a whim) yahoo, and read (several
times) the relevant howto's and documentation.

* Aztech Sound Galaxy Nova 16

* SuSE 6.1

* kernel 2.2.13

* sound compiled in as modules

* the relevant lines in /etc/conf.modules read as follows:

     alias char-major-14 sb
     post-install sb /sbin/modprobe "-k" "adlib_card"
     options sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1 dma16=5 mpu_io=0x330
     options adlib_card io=0x388

* cat /dev/sndstat yields:

     OSS/Free:3.8s2++-971130
     Load type: Driver loaded as a module
     Kernel: Linux host1 2.2.13 #7 Fri Nov 26 22:57:42 CST 1999 i586
     Config options: 0

     Installed drivers:

     Card config:

     Audio devices:
     0: Sound Blaster (8 BIT/MONO ONLY) (2.01)

     Synth devices:
     0: Yamaha OPL3

     Midi devices:
     0: Sound Blaster

     Timers:
     0: System clock

     Mixers:

* when I try to use a program that uses a mixer (obviously), I get "Can't
open /dev/mixer: Operation not supported by device"

Any ideas on what I'm forgetting/missing/not doing/shouldn't be doing?

Many thanks in advance,

Dan
