This answer seems the best....

Looks like when dhcpcd was invoked it queried the server and got a new
dynamic IP and name associated with the connection.  Since you have
a static IP....you don't need to query for a dynamic IP....hopefully
disabling dhcpcd should fix the problem....I think Kyle's on target.

Madhat who suggested using DISPLAY=:0.0 is on the money too.  That avoids
the hostname issue when it comes to local X11 stuff.
