[NTLUG:Discuss] SuSE install on a Packard-Bell (yech)

Ever persistent in my quest to convert the masses, I've been trying to
help my brother install SuSE 6.2 on a Packard-Bell 486. The problem:
The CD-ROM isn't recognized by the install script. Solutions tried:
We've confirmed the CD-ROM is a Panasonic/SoundBlaster16-compat combo,
at port 0x220, type 6, but the autoprobe that's done when you try to
install the CD-ROM module fails. Per the FM, we're using "sbpcd
0x230,6". Anybody have any suggestions, short of a new computer (which
isn't an option right now)?
