This discussion has prompted me to once again look into something I tried to
setup a few months ago. First, a little background:
I have a DSL line, and my internet connectivity is thru august.net. I have 5
static IPs assigned. I currently use 216.87.138.202 for HisWord.net's
connection to the internet...mail, web server, etc, all works well.
I've attempted to setup virtual web hosts. I first bound my other four IPs to
my NIC, and this worked fine. I can access any of my services (i.e. mail, web
server, DNS, etc) from any machine on my internal "private" network. I can
type http://216.87.138.202 (or hisword.net) and access my "main" webpage, and I
can use http://216.87.138.204 to access a virtual web host (different page).
Everything works as advertised from my internal network.
The problem that I'm having is if I try to access the virtual web hosts from
outside my internal network (try it, if you like). If YOU access
216.87.138.202 from your web browser, you'll get my main HisWord.net web page.
If YOU attempt access 216.87.138.204 from your web brower, you won't see
anything. I am using ipfwadm to provide a firewall for my network, but the
same problem exists even if I disable ipfwadm. The thing that really has me
stumped is that _nothing_ shows up in my logs when I attempt to access
216.87.138.204 from outside my internal network...no errors, no nothing (the
logs do properly show accesses from inside my internal network).
I'm assuming that it has something to do with binding more than one IP to my
NIC, but I don't understand why it works on the internal network but not
externally. Am I attempting the impossible? Is it a problem with my
configuration? Is it a problem with august.net's configuration?
