[NTLUG:Discuss] interesting time quirk...

Hi all:
I have a slight problem with a new machine I put together recently. While
I'm running linux, everything works fine. If I shut down linux, the CMOS
clock gets reset to 1 Jan 1999, midnight. Rebooting from Win95 does not
produce the problem, ie if the time is set correctly in Win95, then the
correct time is preserved during a boot sequence.
The machine is built on a Soyo SY-EH5 V1.1 (spring 1999 vintage)
motherboard with an AMD K6-2 running at 400 MHz. The distribution of linux
on this box started out as Slackware 3.4 (I believe), which I've hacked
heavily. I'm running the 2.2.9 kernel.
I suspect there's something that's happening in the process of shutting
down where an old non-y2k compliant program is interacting with the clock.
Any ideas as to where I should start looking for problems?
Thanks,
