[NTLUG:Discuss] Sendmail Question

I have a question about something that I have never done before and I am
running into problems..
We had an email box go down and I had to add a bunch of users and another
domain to my box.. Here is what I am looking at and I had to add another IP
Address (mail.whatever.net) to the box. I added it to the hosts file
restarted the network and did a ./sendmail restart but now I am getting  all
the users email returned as unknown. I can ping the box. The only difference
here is that the domain for www.whatever.net is on a different box. Is that
what is causing the problem...?? I feel real dumb right now.....
