can you see a website using the ip address?

You might not be routing udp/tcp.
or
You have the wrong DNS server in /etc/resolv.conf  (I am assuming you do not)
OR
make sure that your /etc/nsswitch.conf has this line (the dns is the
important part) :
hosts:      files nisplus nis dns
