Thanks for seconding the point I've tried repeatedly to make.

But, for the record, here's exactly what I said, and it hardly
qualifies as "telling someone off":

That's it. That's the grand total of what I said in response to an
inappropriate post. If that counts as telling someone off, what I
think of as telling someone off is likely to seem like verbal murder.

As for the parameters of this list, they have so far been a matter of
oral history and rough consensus. Part of a list administrator's job
is to make judgment calls about what is and what isn't
on-topic. That's what I was trying to do.

I remember a time when people would email a list administrator
*before* posting a message that might possibly be off-topic, just to
make sure it was ok. I guess those days are long gone.
