Thanks to all for all the assistance I have received.  I am using kppp in
order to connect and had been trying the "killall pppd" command.  That had
not been working.  Thanks to Lee for the /sbin/ifdown ppp0.  That one worked
first time, everytime.  Now I almost feel ready to hack a kernel since I can
get on and off the Internet.  Thanks again to all who responded.  Dennis in
Waco
