[NTLUG:Discuss] Linux Certifications

Sadly none of these certification have any HEAVY value with
headhunters, personnel offices, or general IT managers. Right now CCIE
(Cisco) and to a lesser extent M$CE certs are much more visbable to the
folks or software that screens your resume. RHCE has been around for
about a year and everything else in the Linux world less than that. And
it takes time for the value of the cert to become know by the people
who dothe hiring. The short answer to the question is that none of the
Linux certs will bring you more money today. They will increse YOUR
value and should make you more useful. But you can't hang a dollar
value on it, yet.

The RHCE seems to be the roughest of the tests mainly because of the
heavy hands on sections. The RHCE info is about 85% generic Linux and
15% RH. I've been on the LPI mailing list since its inception and it
appears to be the next most complete and is closely followed by the
SAIR. The LPI and SAIR have been hamstrung by trying to figure out
what to cover at a basic level and what is advanced (i.e. How much Lilo
or disk partition info is basic and when does it spill over to
intermediate). I have been told the Caldera is between the Redhat and
SAIR/LPI in completeness. But as for which 'one' to take will depend
on time and the value of the people with the certification.

I took my RHCE in Dallas and it was a tough test. Redhat is passing
about 60% of those who take the test and you'ld better be comfortable
with Linux installs before attending. The RHCE cheat books cover as
much as they can without violating the NDA but still leave some details
to YOUR skill and experince. I will take the LPI tests after they fix
some bugs (like six weeks to get the results back).
