try this command:

startx -- -bpp 16

to fix your color depth.   

Try cycling through the different default resolutions like this: while in
X, hold down the ctl and alt keys, and tap either the [+] or [-] key on
your keypad.  if that doesn't cycle through any different resolutions,
you'll have to either manually edit your /etc/X11/XF86Config file and
restart X, or, as root, run the 'XF86Setup' command from console and add
your desired resolutions there.
