1. I would personally upgrade the kernal. But I've used redhat 5.2 in
the pass for dell poweredge servers with no problem. 

2. The answer is yes but you should know what kind of mother board you
are getting first so you can make sure what ever you compile in the
kernal you will have the support you need. Modules help on this but it
always pay's to be safe.

3. Yes because you can keep your existing kernal and just boot that
instead of the new smp kernal.
