1) Look at benchmarks - especially ones indicative of how you will use the
computer. www.cpureview.com has reviews of both and the k6-3 is clearly much
faster than the k6-2 (2-3 times faster.)

2) Next most important criteria (in performance per cost) is how overclockable
it is. The rated MHz on the chip is more a marketing decision than "what speed
you should run it at". In fact, it is simply a cost/benefit analysis. It
might be worth it to you to have an occasional glitch at 50% faster. As a
rule, on-die cache is more overclockable; celeron, k6-3, and coppermine p3's are
very overclockable (50% without a problem).

However, the athlon is also very overclockable because AMD has chosen to give
them a very large safety margin, and now with over a dozen products (golden
fingers) on the market you can easily do it yourself
(http://www.amdzone.com/articleview.cfm?ArticleID=161). When you can buy an
athlon 500 at $150 and run it at 750 MHz, this is clearly a best buy processor.
Finally, you should get an athlon instead of a K6 if you care about Floating
Point performance.
