Since this thread was originally posted, XFree86 4.0
has been released with multihead support.  It may not
be exactly what you are looking for, but I installed it
quite painlessly and the results were kinda cool!

What I wanted to be able to do is use 2 monitors as a single
desktop.  For example, I wanted to start gimp and place
the image to be edited on one monitor and the various
toolkits on the other.  I've seen this done on a MAC,
and it makes things much easier.

What I actually got was 2 different desktops which can't
be shared.  When I started fvwm it initialized on both
desktops (monitors), with completely seperate task bars etc.
