[NTLUG:Discuss] File permissions in Samba?

I'm having difficulty with file permissions in Samba. I made a backup of 
my SMB share using a Windows client and my parallel port tape unit. Now 
I can't restore from tape. The Windows client can't recreate the 
directory structures, so it seems. It does create four files in the root 
of the file share.

I have set

file create mode = 0755
file directory mode = 1000

What elese could I try?
