You can also reboot, and at the LILO prompt, type

linux init=/bin/bash

to get a root shell without going through init/mingetty.  When you fix the
problem, reboot.  

Actually, on reflection, you may not need to reboot -- an 'exec /sbin/init'
should do the trick...
