I'd like to add one thing to that rant, but first I'm gonna say that I
agree 100% with you!  People ARE writing horrendous HTML now-a-days. 
Here's what I wanted to add though:

For anyone who didn't already know, you can test your website to see if
it is 100% correct HTML.  Go to http://validator.w3.org/ and type in
your wesite.  It will tell you where you goofed.
