the problem turns out to be half a dimm

if at the lilo prompt I enter

linux mem=128m
it gives the INIT and other errors

but if I enter
linux mem=64m
it boots from hda or fd0 just fine

this is a 128MB PC100 dimm from a local, large coral..er..store that I got
cause they have it going for c h e a p

I guess u get what you pay for, eh?
