Possible, but unlikely. I have an Adaptec 2940U2W, which also uses the
AIC7xxx driver; I'm running kernel 2.2.14 and have been for a while. The
SCSI card works fine, my primary HD is hanging off it.
It's been so long since I last burned a disk, though, that I don't remember
if it was before the upgrade. I suspect that it was AFTER I installed
2.2.14, but don't quote me on that. However, I have a Yamaha CDRW of a
brand that nobody's mentioned here, and it was a seamless install [1], so I
can't really provide more help.

[1] Well, ok, after I got a driver for the SCSI card that wouldn't kernel
panic when probing the bus on boot; this was back on kernel 2.2.5 or
whatever that didn't have the aic7xxx drivers included....
