That's the entire point the 'cdrecord' program *doesn't* work - it
locks up my machine.
However, it turns out that 'cdrecord' replaced an older program
called 'cdwrite' which isn't distributed anymore.
'cdwrite' worked *perfectly* with my drive...I did a web search (using
the www.google.com/linux search engine) and found copied of the cdwrite
RPM all over the place. It was a bit harder to track down the sources
and (importantly) the 'man' page.
For IDE drives, I believe you need to install a SCSI emulator that makes
the IDE look like a SCSI device as far as cdrecord/cdwrite are concerned.
