Are you sure it isn't a V2? 3Dfx make a Voodoo-2 board
that's labelled V2-1000, but as you say, there isn't a
V3-1000.

The V2 is considerably less good than a V3 because it
can only do full-screen 3D. You can tell for sure because
the V2 has two video connectors on the back (one input
and one output) where the V3 has only one (erm - at least
the V3-2000 has only one - perhaps the 3000 and 3500 have
some fancy TV-out connectors - but still only one PC-video
connection I think).

The V2 needs to work alongside a regular 2D graphics
card - which provides your usual 2D desktop when you
are not running 3D.

If you just bought it in a store, I'd strongly advise you
to take it back and pay the little extra for a V3 or an
nVidia card. (a TNT2 ...or GeForce if your pockets are
deep! The latest nVidia OpenGL drivers for Linux *rock*)

If it was a super-cheap freebie, it's still a usable card
for most games (all my stuff supports it) - but pretty
useless for 3D applications that need heavy GUI support
or need to run in a window for some reason.
