[NTLUG:Discuss] An old "friend" returns in a new suit

My gigabyte Motherboard is booting funny again
if I boot from ide  it hangs.....
sometimes when it tries to bring up eth0 during INIT(dhcp from a dsl modem)
sometimes right after starting X ( from startx not k/g/xdm)

but if I boot the same kernel from a boot floppy
all is ok

no complaints about memory now, though

I want to know if this is a defective something or 
is gigabyte known for bad boards( as far as linux is concerned)

this is a GA 5AA w/ ALi chipset
K6-III 400 (no overclocking)
