I just downloaded the iso image and mounted it with the loopback device, and
copied the RedHat directory to /.
I also did a net install with nfs off a cheetah drive and private 100Mbps
ethernet - much faster than a cdrom

it is best to download their iso image, burn a cd and install from
there. However, if you do copy files
to your hard drive, the permissions must be set correctly. If the
permissions of the files are incorrect, redhat refuses to install. this
is a bug in my opinion. At one time, their mailing list archive had a
message in it that described how to set the permissions up (it gave a
script). I'm not at a point I can search for it, but that is most likely
the problem.
