I have the 56k Sportster voicefaxmodem.  It has always worked great for me thru
several isp's and RH's without modification.
It may be the remote modem is incompatible, and there are AT commands which will
make the sportster more tolerant (it's been too long ago to remember what they
were).  Try some of the free ISP dialup's out there to test it.

Actually, never mind.

It worked for about 10 minutes and then froze again.

Has anyone gotten this modem to work reliably under
RH 6.1?  It worked fine under RH 6.0.
