Well, I now use gdm, so it's been a while.

In theory, either should work, but I vaguely recall having some sort of X
authentication problems putting the startx and the exit on the same line.
In fact, now that I think about it, I vaguely recall having X
authentication problems running startx in the background.  I do remember
discovering that starting x in the foreground, then switching back to that
VT, hitting C-z, and backgrounding the task seemed to work.

Along these general lines: can anyone point me to a description of the
various X authentication methods?  The X manual pages and documentation
(included with RH6.2, at any rate) aren't much help here.
