Suse uses rpm's too. Not sure why your going to all the trouble when all you
have to do is "rpm --rebuild package.src.rpm".
I find rpm an essential system management tool, beyond just installing software.
I have a very recent gnumeric that I installed myself, version .52, and it does
not use libpixbufloader. Perhaps an incorrect compile option?
Just a wild guess, since you must be far into it by now, but some tar.gz
packages will use prefix "/usr/local" or even "/opt" instead of "/usr" by
default. If you don't have all your search paths set up correctly, like in the
Makefile's and /etc/ld.so.conf, programs will not find things.

I guess I do need to give a little more information:
I am not using RedHat, but SuSE 6.1. Moreover (or consequently) I am not
using RPM, rather I am compiling all the sources (./configure, make, make
install). The error message regarding libpixbufloader-png.so is generated
by, for example, xchat and gnumeric.
Thanks,
Dan
