[NTLUG:Discuss] CONCLUSION:firewall won't talk to cable modem

  If you can get the hardware MAC address, there is a way in the Linux
ethernet drivers to pretend to be another hardware card. At that point,
you should be able to use the laptop.  I don't remember how you do this,
but I do know it is available in the drivers.
