run a mixer as user
check to see if the mic is turned down or muted
if that doesnt work run the mixer as root
if that works then you got perm' issues

in any event you dont have to load a module for your mic
just for your soundcard, so if you have sound coming out
you have the driver loaded to put the sound back in

in fact I have the opposite issue(though it doesnt bother me...yet)
my mic is always on, so if it is plugged into the card I here
the mic and what ever the computer is playing at the same time
