[NTLUG:Discuss] upgrade kernel only?

we're running a very stable redhat 5.2 server which we recently upgraded
to an MP configuration. the kernel gen (2.0.36) went quite well and
we've been running now for 40 days on the MP.

i've heard that the 2.2 kernels have much better MP support than the
'old' 2.0 kernels.

now here's the dumb question:

rather than upgrading from 5.2 to 6.1, which may require a lot of
re-build and editing of conf files, can we go get the kernel source for
(say) 2.2.16 and just gen the new kernel and modules? if feasible, is
this prudent for a production server?

any advice would be greatly appreciated.....
