Thanks Steve and Keith.  I'll try the 2.4 kernel first, since he's having other
bizarre problems ( thousands of syslog errors about "disk change on removable
drive", and awe32 card refusing to play wav files, even tho' I set up the pnp
and loaded modules like it should be) .  They're pretty much windoze people and
wouldn't likely switch isp's (doesn't that cost more?) just to connect from
linux.
