Can someone explain broadcast addresses and in particular why Linux defaults to
the .254 instead of .255?
e.g. I installed a Linux server onto this network without checking the
broadcast IP. Well, Linux created the broadcast adress at 111.222.333.254 when
all other servers on the network had a broadcast of 111.222.333.255. Needless
to say, some devices replaced thier broadcast address with the 111.222.333.254
when the Linux box was fired up and really screwed things up.
I took the Linux box offline and reconfigured it's broadcast IP to
111.222.333.255. What will happen now, when I plug it into the network? Will
everything be cool now? I can't afford to upset everyone again by screwing up
these devices.
