Actually, for a netmask of 255.255.254.0 the subnet number would be 172.28.48.0
and the broadcast address would be 172.28.49.255, leaving 510 possible hosts in
the subnet with addresses in the range 172.28.48.1 through 172.28.49.254, although
you probably wouldn't want to use 172.28.48.255 or 172.28.49.0. The network number
and network mask can be represented together thus: 172.28.48.0/23 meaning that the
23 most significant bits are the subnet, leaving the remaining 9 bits for hosts
within the subnet. 9
